Educational Technology company Mathtoons Media has received funding to develop web-accessed software which allows teachers to create their own mobile practice apps for upper level math and science subjects.

“We’ve had a lot of success with our own Mathtoons mobile practice apps and we are now excited to make our app authoring tools available to educators,” says Mathtoons CEO, Kristin Garn.

The project has received funding through Mitacs Accelerate, a national internship program which connects graduate student interns with companies through collaborative research projects.

Returning Mitacs Accelerate intern, Yipin Guo (UBCO) will work with the Mathtoons development team for the next four months, to help integrate software features that will make it easy for educators to quickly create and share upper level math practice to their students’ mobile devices.

Garn adds, “This research project will help Mathtoons obtain feedback regarding features and usability of its software.  Our goal is to encourage both teachers and students to create quality, digital practice which will result in increased math skills development.”

This internship is a continuation of a previous research project which enabled Mathtoons to incorporate many features into its app authoring software and create early apps like Intro Calculus.

The purpose of the next stage of the research is to refine the authoring tools so that they will be easily accessible for teachers to use.

“The benefit to Mathtoons in working with UBCO and the Mitacs Accelerate program is to obtain early feedback from our intended audience,” says Garn.  “Our goal is to encourage both teachers and students to create quality digital practice which will result in increased math skills development.”

Mathtoons is an educational technology company with the vision to vastly improve student engagement and success in upper level academic subjects by providing students and teachers with integrated mobile practice tools that appeal to today’s digitally native learners.

As a registered developer for both the Apple iTunes and Google Play app stores, Mathtoons has created dozens of academic mobile apps since incorporation in 2011.  They are now developing a web-accessed tool that creates these apps for students to practice on iOS and Android.

Mathtoons Media are a Graduate of the Venture Acceleration Program and are a current Technology Premium Member of AO.
