About the Canadian Open Data Experience:

The Canadian Open Data Experience (CODE) is the first national Open Data hackathon in Canada. It is a 48-hour competition hosted by XMG, one of the largest indie mobile gaming studios in Canada, and supported by the Government of Canada. CODE will take place from February 28th – March 2nd 2014.

Canadian post-secondary students, entrepreneurs and innovators participate to develop applications utilizing federal government data from the Canadian Open Data Portal with the goal of improving the lives of Canadians. The applications will need to conform to a theme that will be announced minutes before the appathon begins and then: ready, set, develop! 48-Hours of hardcore coding!

Those participating in the CODE hackathon can do so in two ways: they can apply to attend a centralized VIP HUB in Toronto or they can participate remotely from their homes, schools or their local coffee shop. At the end of the CODE hackathon, articipants submit their completed applications online to be evaluated.

The teams that submitted the top 15 applications (as judged by a review panel) will be invited to the CODE Grand Finale event on March 28th 2014, where they will pitch their apps during a live judging event to a panel of industry experts and potential investors. The goal is to connect the young entrepreneurs directly to investment firms and venture capitalists to ensure their apps (or ideas) are brought to market. All it takes is one great success story to inspire!

The winners – the teams making the top three applications as declared by the judging panel at the Grand Finale event – will be awarded with prize packages including cash awards, physical prizes and in-kind services. The winning applications may go on to be released commercially either independently by the participants or in co-operation with a third party.
